What is Instrument X?

Instrument X is a neural acoustics modeling engine that bridges classical acoustic tradition with physics-augmented neural synthesis. Unlike legacy sample playback tools that trigger static audio files, Instrument X computes fluid legato, breath swells, and organic room interactions of live session players directly inside your DAW.

Composers & film scorers

  • Automated articulations

Score films without complex keyswitch maps. Articulations shift automatically with note pitch and length, so symphonic drafts in your DAW sound human immediately.

  • Immersive spatial mixing

Shape your acoustic perspective in an 8-to-11-channel microphone mixer panel powered by neural acoustics. Balance mic locations from close mics to Decca trees, and ambient room pairs with the physical reflections of a customizable scoring stage.

  • Stacked expressions

Compose deep, single-track performances. Blend special techniques, like sharp accents on ongoing tremolos, col legno articulations during a violin passage, or brass mutes on a single note.

  • Lightweight efficiency

Keep pro-grade orchestral instruments without exhausting storage. Neural acoustic modeling replaces legacy multi-gigabyte sample software, delivering fast load times anywhere.

Music producers

  • Dynamic polyphony

Never worry about overlapping notes cutting each other off. Write dense, evolving chords and complex harmonies inside a single track editor window that naturally scales and rings out smoothly.

  • Instant variation generation

Break creative blocks with alternative performance takes. Regenerate an entire sequence at once or tweak individual parameters like timbre drift, pitch curves, and dynamic intensity.

  • Organic electronic textures

Add realism to your electronic tracks. Combine continuous micro-tonal pitch glides and automation lanes to push neural-acoustic sound sources far beyond the boundaries of samples and loops.

  • Fluid gesture synthesis

Continuously morph notes. Create extreme articulations and expressions, like an intimate whisper building into an aggressive growl in a single, unbroken crescendo.

  • Plays nice with Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro & Vocoflex

Instrument X integrates with Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro and Vocoflex, and uses the same workflow to compose and automate instruments.

Unified Articulation Editor

Manage performance techniques and articulations in one interface. Unify symphonic expressions like staccato, legato, and tenuto with specialized, instrument-specific techniques like string col legno or brass mutes. Stack and combine articulations on a single note and unlock complex, hybrid performance textures not possible in traditional sample playback.

Predictive Dynamics Lane

Automatically map context-appropriate dynamics across your arrangement, with a manual override lane for full control. Curve adjustments morph the instrument's physical timbre, harmonic saturation, and kinetic response, mirroring a real player's musicality and execution.

AI Performance Retakes

Break out of creative ruts by generating alternative, organic performance “takes” for specific note phrases. Re-roll an entire section at once or target subtle dynamics and articulations like timbre character drift, micro-pitch curves, vibrato or intensity.

Advanced Polyphony & Infinite Scale

Effortlessly write complex chords, dense contrapuntal lines, and evolving harmonies inside a single track. Overlapping notes render as completely separate voices instead of cutting each other off mid-bar.

Microphone Mixer Panel

Take control of the soundstage mixer. Adjust and balance immersive, real-world microphone configurations, like hyper-detailed spot mics, pristine Decca tree arrays, and wide stereo room ambient pairs. Reproduce the sound fields of a physical scoring stage.

MusicXML Input Support

Seamlessly transition projects from traditional notation programs while preserving vital score data. Tempos, time signatures, articulations, and dynamics translate instantly into live performance data.

Science & engineering

Physics, taught to a neural network

Instrument X’s engine integrates spatial acoustics with neural audio synthesis. Rather than streaming gigabytes of static sample triggers, the synthesis engine runs on a deep learning architecture trained on ethically licensed performances from professional session players — every expansion recorded through 8 to 11 microphones, from close spots to Decca tree to room ambience.

Keeping that many simultaneous feeds phase-coherent is where standard neural architectures fall apart. Dreamtonics' patent-pending approach uses a custom-built dodecahedral speaker array to measure the spatial acoustics of the recording environment — decoupling the room's directional impulse responses from the dry instrument source.

The result: an engine that renders the instrument's sound in any direction, preserving the physical nuance of bowing and fingering, while running entirely on a standard laptop.

What composers are saying

  • Instrument X makes working with complex articulations quicker, more intuitive, and genuinely more fun. Its intelligent keyswitching alone sets it apart, creating smooth, natural transitions without breaking the creative flow.

  • It completely reshapes the orchestral mockup workflow. The level of expression you get, without lugging around 100 GB of samples, gives this tech incredible potential for the future.

  • After 20 years of writing music it's pretty hard to surprise me with a new VST and this thing did. Everything stays handwritten and 100% mine, it just takes way less time to get there. And it just sounds crazy good. My new go-to.

Frequently Asked Questions

The host application for Instrument X is free for download and trial, but paid Instrument Expansions are required to create with various instruments inside the host application.

The Instrument X host application is free for download and trial, and it’s the software used to load Instrument Expansions. Instrument Expansions (e.g., Orchestral Violin 1, Flute 1) are the data and model files required for music production and sound design inside Instrument X’s host application.

No. Instrument X uses neural networks strictly to model the acoustics and expressions of real instruments recorded by session players. It does not compose or generate music—you write and control every note.

Legacy sample libraries trigger static recorded audio files from large disk drives. Instrument X uses neural acoustics modeling to translate notation into organic, expressive sounds. It can blend articulations, shape dynamics, and combine continuous expressions in ways rigid sample playback can’t — while using far less storage.

Instrument Expansions give you increased access to more instruments designed for Instrument X. You can buy them individually, in pick-and-mix packs or in bundles.

Yes, all training data comes from ethically sourced, fully licensed recordings that you can use in any release.

Instrument X supports AU, VST3 and AAX plugin formats.

The engine runs 100% locally and offline without cloud processing. Initial license activation requires internet connection.

Instrument X supports music XML inputs, meaning you can import scoring notation from any software that outputs music XML.

If you want to try before you buy, each Instrument Expansion comes with a free, 14-day trial. The only restrictions are a 150-note group limit per group and no bouncing support.
